Paul Malone was born in Ireland and migrated to Australia in the early 1960s. He graduated in Economics from Sydney University and completed his cadetship at the Sydney Morning Herald. He has worked for The Age, the Australian Financial Review and the Canberra Times, where he was the political correspondent for five years. In 1990 he joined the Australian Public Service and then worked in ministers’ offices.


He has a Master of Management - Industry Policy from the Australian National University. ANU E-Press published Paul’s book Australian Department Heads Under Howard: Career Paths and Practice in 2006


In has an on-going interest in Borneo, first travelling in and around the island in 1974, and returning in recent years, writing articles on the Penan, logging and development issues.
